It’s OFFICIAL! After many, many months of soul-searching, my retirement was announced this morning and my replacement named.
27 years ago this April, with my kids out of diapers and all safely enrolled in school, I rejoined the workforce and began what would become a very fulfilling career with then, HomeLand Realty, now United Real Estate Solutions. It has been a wild ride, taking me in nearly every direction real estate can take you at one point or another. It has constantly evolved and reinvented itself and has been a fabulous learning experience. I have met so many fantastic people over the years, many of whom have become lifetime friends. Now, effective on my birthday, June 20, I will leave the comfort of what I know and do best to investigate other options that may exist..
Years ago, when people reached a certain age, they were just expected to retire. It was an end. It was giving in to the idea that they were too old to be a contributing factor in the workplace and, sometimes, even in life in general.
But that is NOT the case. Retirement is a BEGINNING, and an opportunity to move forward and discover new directions in life. My favorite Martin Luther King quotation says that “Faith is taking the first step, even when you can’t see the whole staircase.” That is where I am today. I have taken that first step and really have no idea where the climb will lead. But I am really excited to find out. It’s OUT OF THE FRYING PAN … and into?????
This blog is my first venture in that new direction. I hope to explore the reinvention of retirement and to connect with many who have or are in the process of doing the same. I look forward to hearing other’s retirement reinvention stories and to sharing them with all of you. There is a big wide world of opportunity out there and this “senior” is about to finally join my husband in exploring the options. Hope you’ll come along for the ride.
Later.
Cathy suggested I share this, from Anne Lamott, one of my favorite writers and spiritual guides: https://www.facebook.com/AnneLamott/posts/662177577245222

Congratulations! Welcome to Viena. Enjoy.
Slow down you crazy child
You’re so ambitious for a juvenile
But then if you’re so smart tell me,
Why are you still so afraid?
Where’s the fire, what’s the hurry about?
You better cool it off before you burn it out
You got so much to do and only
So many hours in a day
But you know that when the truth is told
That you can get what you want
Or you can just get old
You’re gonna kick off before you even get halfway through
When will you realize… Vienna waits for you?
Slow down you’re doing fine
You can’t be everything you want to be before your time
Although it’s so romantic on the borderline tonight
Too bad, but it’s the life you lead
You’re so ahead of yourself that you forgot what you need
Though you can see when you’re wrong
You know you can’t always see when you’re right
You got your passion, you got your pride
But don’t you know that only fools are satisfied?
Dream on, but don’t imagine they’ll all come true
When will you realize… Vienna waits for you?
Slow down you crazy child
Take the phone off the hook and disappear for a while
It’s alright, you can afford to lose a day or two
When will you realize… Vienna waits for you?
And you know that when the truth is told
That you can get what you want or you can just get old
You’re gonna kick off before you even get halfway through
Why don’t you realize… Vienna waits for you?
